Our Heritage: From the Earth, To Your Cells
Dr. Sebi's heritage is not a story — it is a lineage of minerals. From the volcanic soil of Ilanga, Honduras, where he was born, to the wild Caribbean coasts where Sea Moss is still harvested by hand, to the Mexican mountains where he first healed himself with plants, every herb in our compounds traces back to mineral-rich earth.
He was raised by his grandmother, Mama Hay, in a village where children learned medicine by watching what grew where. Sebi spent his childhood barefoot in fields of wild plants, observing which leaves animals chose when sick, which barks the elders chewed for energy, which roots the women used through every season of their lives. That observation — of nature's mineral logic — became the foundation of everything he later codified as the African Bio-Mineral Balance.
He carried that knowledge across oceans — to New Orleans, to the steam-engineering ships, to Mexico, and finally back to the world. Wherever he went, he carried one truth: the body is built from minerals, and only minerals can rebuild it.
"All of my influences are Mama Hay. Mama Hay had love. Mama Hay had compassion. Mama Hay knew the plants."
— Dr. Sebi
This heritage — of observation, of soil, of minerals — is what we honor in every formula. Nothing has been modernized. Nothing has been diluted. The plants Dr. Sebi chose are the plants we use, sourced from the same mineral-rich earth, in the same proportions, with the same intent.

Ilanga, Honduras: Where the Minerals Met the Man
Alfredo Darrington Bowman — the man the world would come to know as Dr. Sebi — was born in 1933 in the village of Ilanga, Honduras. The land there sits on volcanic earth, and the rivers run through soil that has been collecting trace minerals for tens of thousands of years.
This was the ground that grew the plants Sebi would later credit with saving his life. The wild Sarsaparilla that climbed through the brush. The Sea Moss that washed onto the Caribbean coast. The Bladderwrack that gathered in the tide pools. Even the children's bare feet pulled minerals up from the earth daily.
Dr. Sebi never went to school. His education came from the land. By the time he left Ilanga as a young man, he had already absorbed — without yet being able to name it — the truth that would define his life's work: the soil makes the plant, the plant makes the body, and a body built from mineral-rich land cannot be matched by anything man can synthesize.
A Heritage Built on One Truth: It Is the Mineral That Does the Work.
Dr. Sebi's life can be read as one long argument with modern medicine. While doctors chased symptoms, he chased minerals. While pharmaceuticals isolated compounds, he honored whole plants. While the world looked for a cure, he looked at the soil.
He healed himself with minerals at 30. He defended that philosophy in a New York courtroom at 55, presenting witness after witness whose chronic conditions had reversed under his bio-mineral protocols. The court ruled in his favor. The world is still catching up.
"Your honor, there is only one disease — and minerals are the cure."
— Dr. Sebi
Carried Across Generations
Dr. Sebi's influence reached far beyond clinical care. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC became one of his most public advocates. Nipsey Hussle planned a documentary on his life. Kendrick Lamar referenced him by name on his Pulitzer Prize-winning work. The lineage of mineral healing he traced from his grandmother's hands now runs through music, culture, and millions of households.

Mama Hay & The First Lesson
Mama Hay never wrote a book. She never gave a lecture. She taught the way her people had taught for generations — by walking the boy through the brush and pointing.
This leaf for when the blood is weak. This bark for when the joints stiffen. This root for when the woman is bleeding too heavily. This vine for when the man can no longer rise.
What she was passing to her grandson, without ever naming it, was a complete mineral cartography of the Honduran landscape — which plants held which minerals, which seasons concentrated them most, which preparations made them most absorbable. It was the original African Bio-Mineral Balance, generations before it had a name. Sebi simply codified it for the world.

The Steam-Engineer Insight
In his twenties, Sebi went to sea as a steam engineer. The work was practical — maintaining the boilers, balancing pressure, monitoring pH so the pipes wouldn't corrode. But the principles he learned in that engine room would become the philosophical bedrock of everything he later taught.
He noticed that the engine ran best when its water sat at pH 7.1, slightly alkaline. If the water dropped acidic, the system corroded from the inside. If it stayed alkaline and mineral-rich, the engine lasted decades.
The insight was simple, and it changed his life: the human body is also an engine. If alkaline, mineral-rich water keeps a steel boiler alive for fifty years, what would it do for a body? Every herb he later selected had to pass one test — was it alkaline, and was it mineral-rich? Everything else was secondary.

92 Minerals: The Discovery
Modern nutritional science recognizes around 16 essential minerals. Dr. Sebi recognized 92.
His count came not from a laboratory but from years of cross-referencing the mineral profiles of the plants that had healed him with the chemistry of the human body. Sea Moss alone, he taught, contained 92 of the trace elements the body uses to build, repair, and electrify itself. The body is electrical, he said — and electricity is just minerals doing their work.
This was his radical claim, and the heart of the African Bio-Mineral Balance: that nearly every chronic illness in the modern world is, at root, a deficiency of one or more of these 92 trace elements — and that whole-plant minerals, taken consistently, can restore what isolated supplements cannot.
African Bio-Mineral Balance: The Codification
By the late 1980s, Dr. Sebi had distilled his observations into a complete system. He called it the African Bio-Mineral Balance — a name that honored the African herbal traditions his ancestors had carried across the Atlantic, the bio-electric nature of the human cell, and the mineral foundation of all healing.
The system rested on three pillars:
- Alkalinity — the body must hold an alkaline electrical baseline
- Mineralization — the body must be saturated with the full spectrum of trace elements
- Cleansing — the body must be relieved of the mucus that blocks absorption
Every formula he created — Bromide Plus, Bio Ferro, Viento, Testo, Estro, the entire pharmacopoeia — was built to serve one or more of these pillars. Every one of them was, and remains, a re-mineralization protocol.
The Heritage Through the Years
1933 — Born Into Mineral-Rich Earth
Alfredo Darrington Bowman is born in Ilanga, Honduras. The volcanic soil and Caribbean coastline that shaped his childhood would shape his life's work. The plants he grew up among — Sarsaparilla, Sea Moss, Bladderwrack — are still the foundation of every Dr. Sebi formula sold today.
1930s–1950s — Mama Hay's Living Pharmacopoeia
Raised by his grandmother in the bush, Sebi learns to identify dozens of medicinal plants by sight, smell, and the seasons in which they grow. Mama Hay's lessons — never written down, always demonstrated — become the original African Bio-Mineral Balance.
1950s — The Steam-Engineer Realization
Sebi works as a steam engineer aboard merchant ships and discovers that the same alkaline, mineral-rich water that keeps a boiler alive for decades is what the human body needs to do the same. The bio-engineering metaphor would underpin his entire philosophy.
1960s — The Mexican Mountains
Suffering from asthma, diabetes, obesity, and impotence, Sebi meets an herbalist in Cuernavaca, Mexico, who places him on a 94-day herbal protocol. He reverses every condition he had. The minerals that healed him came from plants grown in some of the most mineral-dense volcanic soil on Earth. He never forgets it.
1970s–1980s — The African Bio-Mineral Balance Takes Shape
Sebi refines his methodology, formulates the first generation of bio-mineral compounds, and begins helping clients reverse chronic illness with whole plants. He names the system the African Bio-Mineral Balance, honoring the lineage of African herbal medicine carried into the Americas.
1988 — Vindicated in Court
Charged with practicing medicine without a license in New York, Sebi defends himself by parading witness after witness through the courtroom — people whose chronic illnesses had reversed under his bio-mineral protocols. The court rules in his favor. The verdict legitimizes mineral healing in the eyes of the law for the first time.
2014 — Dr. Sebi's Cell Food Founded
With his disciple Pablo Medina, Dr. Sebi founds Dr. Sebi's Cell Food — a company built to preserve his compounds exactly as he formulated them, source the herbs from the same mineral-rich land he chose, and carry his bio-mineral lineage forward unchanged.
2016 — The Founder Passes, The Heritage Endures
Dr. Sebi passes away at 82. The formulas remain. The sourcing standards remain. The philosophy remains. What he carried from Mama Hay's kitchen now travels in capsules and teas to households on every continent. The mineral lineage continues.
Today — Carrying the Heritage Forward
Every bottle we ship is a continuation of a lineage that began in a Honduran village a century ago. We honor Dr. Sebi by changing nothing — the formulas, the sourcing, the intent, the philosophy. The minerals he chose are the minerals we deliver. The body he sought to restore is the body we still seek to restore.
Cultural Roots of the Mineral Lineage
In Dr. Sebi's Own Words
"Disease is only one."
Dr. Sebi explains the mineral foundation of all healing — that disease is one phenomenon, the compromise of the mucous membrane, and that the answer lies in restoring the body's alkaline, mineral-rich electrical state.
"We Need Love."
Beyond the minerals, Dr. Sebi taught that healing requires love — of self, of community, of the earth that grows our food. The bio-mineral and the bio-emotional are inseparable.
"Don't you eat this."
The food we eat must match our biological nature. Dr. Sebi explains why genetically-aligned, mineral-rich food is the foundation of the African Bio-Mineral lifestyle — and what doesn't belong on our plates.
