Best herbs for diabetes

These Are the Best Herbs for Diabetics

Reviewed by Pablo Medina, Herbalist

Last updated: April 2026

For centuries, herbal remedies have been a cornerstone of traditional medicine systems worldwide. In the realm of diabetes management, these herbs have emerged as potent allies, which is why we created an all-natural solution: Dr. Sebi’s Alkaline SugarBalance.

Unlike pharmaceutical medications, which often target a single aspect of diabetes, the herbs in SugarBalance offer a holistic approach. They not only help regulate high blood sugar levels but also address various underlying factors, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired insulin sensitivity.

This approach recognizes that the body's systems are interconnected. By exploring the world of herbs for diabetes, we delve into a holistic, time-tested approach that considers the body as a whole, aiming to restore balance and vitality to people with type 2 diabetes.

📋 Key Takeaways

  • Alkaline herbs like prodigiosa and guaco have been traditionally used to support healthy blood sugar balance
  • Dr. Sebi taught that diabetes stems from a compromised pancreas due to mucus buildup from acid-forming foods
  • An alkaline diet following the Nutritional Guide is the foundation — herbs complement dietary changes
  • The SugarBalance formula was specifically developed for blood sugar support within Dr. Sebi's methodology

How Herbs Help Lower Blood Sugar and Treat Diabetes

Many herbs contain natural compounds that can help increase insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and support the body's ability to manage glucose effectively. Some herbs contain bioactive compounds that mimic the action of insulin and enhance glucose uptake by cells, while others can help reduce sugar absorption in the intestines.

These herbs — when incorporated into a balanced, alkaline diet and holistic approach to diabetes management — can be valuable allies in helping individuals achieve better glycemic control and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.

Are Herbs Better Than Drugs to Manage Diabetes?

Diabetes medications, such as insulin injections and oral drugs like metformin, have been the standard approach to treat diabetes. While these medications can be effective in many cases, they often come with drawbacks and potential side effects.

For instance, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort, weight gain, or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when using these medications. Additionally, the long-term safety and sustainability of pharmaceutical approaches have raised concerns.

In contrast, herbal remedies present a safer option to manage diabetes. Herbs for diabetes are derived from nature and have been used for generations in various traditional healing systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

These remedies aim to address the root causes of diabetes rather than just alleviating its symptoms. They offer a holistic approach that not only helps regulate high blood sugar but also enhances overall health — particularly pancreatic health

Furthermore, herbs typically have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs. As research continues to support the potential of herbs in diabetes management, more individuals are turning to these ancient remedies as a complementary or alternative approach to enhance their well-being.

Best Herbs for Diabetics

1. Ginger

Ginger, a popular spice with anti-inflammatory properties, may also offer benefits for diabetes. Studies, including a February 2014 one in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, have shown that ginger improves fasting blood glucose levels and increases insulin sensitivity. Its active components, like gingerol, are believed to contribute to these effects by positively impacting glucose metabolism.

2. Oregano

Oregano contains compounds like carvacrol and rosmarinic acid, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in scientific studies, like a December 2022 study in the Journal of Food Biochemistry

These properties can be particularly valuable for people with diabetes as chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are common contributors to the development of complications associated with the condition. Additionally, some research suggests that oregano may help increase insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels.

3. Sage

Sage, a common herb with both culinary and medicinal uses, may hold potential for diabetes management. Some studies suggest that sage extracts may help lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

A study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that sage supplementation significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels in participants with type 2 diabetes. While more research is needed, incorporating sage into your diet as a seasoning or herbal tea might offer some benefits for blood sugar control.

4. Cascara Sagrada

Cascara sagrada is a natural laxative often used to relieve constipation, but it might also play a role in helping to manage diabetes. Research indicates that it may help improve blood sugar control. A Journal of Ethnopharmacology study showed that cascara sagrada extract exhibited anti-diabetic properties, resulting in reduced blood sugar levels in animals.

5. Dandelion

Dandelion is more than a weed; it's a potential ally in diabetes management. Studies suggest that dandelion may help regulate blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

Research from September 2022 in the journal Foods demonstrated that dandelion root extracts could reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic mice. While more human studies are needed, incorporating dandelion leaves in salads or drinking dandelion tea may provide potential benefits for people with diabetes.

6. Burdock Root

Burdock root is known for its detoxifying properties, and it might offer some advantages for diabetes management as well. Early research suggests that burdock root extract may help lower blood sugar levels. A study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that burdock root extract lowered blood glucose levels in diabetic mice.

7. Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle, a plant often used in traditional medicine, may have a role in helping to manage diabetes. Some studies suggest that nettle leaf extract can help reduce blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity.

A June 2022 review in Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders found that nettle leaf extract had a hypoglycemic effect on diabetes. Try adding nettle leaves to your diet in soups or herbal teas for their potential blood sugar benefits.

8. Muicle

Muicle, an herb commonly used in traditional medicine, has been explored for its potential anti-diabetic properties. Some research indicates that muicle extracts may help lower blood sugar levels. A study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology demonstrated that muicle extract exhibited anti-diabetic effects in animal models.

9. Hierba del Sapo

Hierba del sapo, also known as culantro, is an herb with potential to help treat diabetes. Early research suggests that hierba del sapo extracts may help improve blood sugar control. A February 2021 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that hierba del sapo extract reduced blood sugar levels in diabetic mice.

10. Huereque

Huereque is a traditional herbal remedy with potential benefits for managing diabetes. While scientific studies on huereque are limited, traditional uses suggest its utility in blood sugar control. It's commonly used in various cultures for its potential to reduce thirst and support overall health.

11. Tronadora

Tronadora, also known as Bridelia ferruginea, is an herb with potential anti-diabetic properties. Traditional uses indicate that tronadora may help lower blood sugar levels. Some studies have explored its potential, but more research is necessary to confirm its effectiveness and establish safe dosages for diabetes management.

12. Bay Leaf

Bay leaf, a common culinary herb, may have diabetes-fighting properties. Studies, including one in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, have indicated that bay leaf extract can help lower blood glucose levels and improve cholesterol profiles in people with type 2 diabetes. Its unique combination of bioactive compounds may contribute to these effects.

13. Cayenne

Cayenne pepper, known for its spicy kick, contains capsaicin, which may help with blood sugar management. A March 2023 study in the journal Molecules found that capsaicin supplementation reduced post-meal blood sugar spikes in people with type 2 diabetes. Capsaicin is believed to enhance insulin sensitivity and improve glucose metabolism.

14. Nopal

Prickly pear cactus, also known as nopal, has a history of use in traditional medicine for diabetes. Research in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests that prickly pear extract can help lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity. Its high fiber content may contribute to these effects by slowing down sugar absorption.

    What drinks reduce blood sugar?

There are several drinks that have been shown to help reduce blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. Water plays a crucial role in blood sugar management, as staying hydrated helps your body process glucose effectively and can prevent dehydration-related spikes in blood sugar levels. Herbal teas have also demonstrated potential in helping to regulate blood sugar levels.

What is the quickest home remedy to lower blood sugar?

The quickest home remedy to lower blood sugar is engaging in physical exercise. Thank you. Years ago I was in a play at Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles and after the show Dr. Sebi came back stag an met Ted Lange and the actors in the play “Born A Unicorn”. When I met him, I had no idea who he was but the other actors were treating him like a celebrity. He took one look into my eyes while we were talking and gave me his card and asked me to make an appointment. I told him that I was a struggling actor and if it cost a lot, I could not pay full price for his services. H said just come an s me okay. On the day of my appointment we talked and he gave me a bag full of bottles of herbs and told me to increase my water intake and that if I took the herbs according to his instructions whatever he saw would be taken care of. Dr. Sebi refused to take any money from me. He was so kind. I never forgot him. When I came back for the next appointment he told me I was in good shape because I followed his instructions.
